The annual Onchan Horticultural Society show gave residents the chance to show off their green fingers and celebrate the wonder of home-grown flowers and produce.

The show was held at the Elim Family Centre in Onchan last weekend with classes for flowers, fruit, vegetables, pot plants, confectionery, photography, flower arrangements and crafts.

The prizes were presented by Captain of the Parish Peter Kelly.

The 2019 Blue Riband - Orry and Betty Teare Memorial Rose Bowl for Best in Show was awarded to Mike Garrett.

He won prizes for best flower, gladioli and tomatoes.

Other winners were:

Juan Corrin - Banksian Medal for highest prize money in horticultural classes, Dennis Watterson Memorial Cup for best onions.

Dorothy Farragher - Leo Kane Trophy for most points by a society member, Hinton Trophy for most points in flower, vegetable and fruit sections, H.E. Coole Trophy for best dahlias, Rev. F.M. Cubbon Trophy for best chrysanthemum, Douglas Cashin Cup for most points in vegetable section, A C Vondy Cup for best vegetable, The Society Trophy for best exhibit of potatoes, the Society Trophy for best in vegetable selection, G.M. Ellison Shield for best fruit section.

Hazel Warbuton - Onchan District Commissioners Trophy for most points by an Onchan resident, Holmes’ Trophy for best confectionery exhibit, Society’s Rose Bowl for most points in confectionery section, Mary Clague Cup for best fruit cake, Silver Bon Bon Dish for most points in confectionery section by Onchan WI member, Miss C Skillicorn Memorial Trophy for most points in preserve classes.

Mike Garrett - J.H. Nicholls Trophy for best flower, The Society Trophy for best Gladioli, The Ivy Forrester Smith Memorial Plate for best tomatoes.

Margaret Newton - Rose Trophy.

Lily Dyson - John C Skillicorn Trophy for best cut flowers in novice section.

Jennifer Corrin -J.C. Skillicorn Trophy for best sweet peas, Balakrishna Trophy, Mike Goldie Shield for best pot plant, Society Shield for pot plant other than Begonia, Society Shield for second best pot plant.

Marilyn and Carole Nivision - H.G. Stacy Trophy for six stems of garden flowers.

Catherine Wareing - The Society Trophy for best vegetable in novice section.

Christine Colvin - The Society Trophy for best exhibit in decorative section, Mrs C.E. Gaggs Memorial Trophy for best miniature arrangement, Marguerite Sykes Trophy for best flower arrangement.

Carol Tuson - Nula Balakrishna Memorial Trophy for most points in the decorative section.

Emily Jacobs - Sydney Magee Trophy for best exhibit in the decorative section by an exhibitor aged 16 and under.

Pam Gilmore - Onchan Jubilee WI Cup for best in WI rose class.

Ann Garrett - Fuchsia Award for best exhibit in non-horticultural classes, Howard Corlett Shield for best photograph.

Phil Walton - Kinvig Cup for first place in garden competition. Second place, Jean Alker - Onchan Commissioners Shield. Third place, Marilyn Dobson - Onchan Commissioners Shield. Highly commended - Caroline Bennett and Rachel Vickers.

Katie Jacobs - Kathleen O’Connor Trophy for most points in children’s section.

Children’s awards were presented to: Katie Jacobs, Emily Jacobs, William Newton, Evie Traynor, Samuel Traynor, Sean Kelly, Gabriella Corkish and Lily Dyson.
