Have you ever wanted to find out more about learning Manx Gaelic but were too afraid to ask?

If so, you are in luck, as this week sees the start of a two-month celebration of the Manx language, which will involve a series of language workshops and events designed to make learning Manx attainable, accessible and entertaining.

’Gaelg21’, will feature many free events, held throughout June and July, which will aim to encourage participants to pick up simple Manx terms for everyday usage.

Tomorrow (Friday) sees a Manx mini-musicians workshop at the House of Manannan, from 10.30am, aimed at children up to four years old.

On Saturday there will be a coloayrtys (or conversation) session, between 10am and 11am at the Dovecote Cafe, Kirk Michael, which will be aimed at all levels of Manx speakers, followed by an ’Eaddagh jeant reesht lesh graih’, or a pre-loved ladies clothes sale, at 2pmto 4.30pm at the Methodist Hall, St John’s.

Beach buddies will be re-christened ’Caarjyn ny Traieyn’ (friends of the beaches) for a beach-clean on an as-yet unspecified beach on Sunday morning, from 10am, and on Monday, July 14, there will be a wildflower talk, hosted by John ’Moddey’ Callister at the Ebeneezer Hall, in Kirk Michael, from 7pm.

Other events taking place over the next few weeks will include talks about Manx Gaelic bird names, co-hosted by Culture Vannin and Manx Birdlife, pop-up classes and conversation groups, in-person and online quizzes, language sessions, concerts and song workshops .

There will also be the rare chance for adults to become a key stage two student for the day at the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh.

Gaelg21 has been organised by many of the Manx language organisations and individuals, on behalf of Jeebin, the Manx Language Network.

Language officer Ruth Keggin-Gell said:’A blend of online and real-life events and projects will ensure that Manx speakers and supporters around the world can take part and enjoy Gaelg21 to the full.’

A full programme of events is available from learnmanx.com/gaelg21 or by following Learn Manx on social media.
