A charity that promotes carriage driving for the disabled has been given a boost.

Manx Carriage Driving for Disabled now has another carriagei * their fleet.

The latest addition was built by Fenix Carriages, one of the leading carriage builders in the UK.

Ms Margaret Brockie MBE, who has more than 40 years’ experience within Riding for the Disabled, visited the Isle of Man to asses the carriage’s suitability.

One of the volunteers played the part of the client (a disabled drive), sitting on a wheelchair before being wheeled and loaded onto the carriage, the remaining volunteers worked as a team to ensure it was securely fastened.

The driving coaches then completed some circuits within the Ballavartyn arena, Santon, using two RDA horses, Stewie and Teddy.

During this time, Ms Brockie gave MCD4D members tips and pointers.

Once the assessment was complete, the MCD4D team made their way to the cafeteria part of Ballavartyn for a light lunch which saw Ms Brockie have a question and answer session.

MCD4D thanked the Manx Lottery Trust, Trade Distribution and SCS Logistics Ltd MD Sandra Cottam-Shea for their assistance in bringing the carriage to the Isle of Man.

MCD4D is a member group of Riding for the Disabled.

It aims to give people with disabilities confidence and enjoyment through equestrian activities.

All driving sessions are conducted under the supervision of an experienced RDA carriage driving coach.

The charity relies on volunteers.

MCD4D is open to everyone and are always on the outlook for volunteers.
