The Isle of Man and all its glorious states of weather is the subject of a new photographic exhibition, held at the Erin Arts Centre.
Photographer Mark Boyd has expressed his love for the wild and untamed beauty of our island in a collection he has called ’Temporary State’, alluding to the ever-changing nature of the weather, and the effects if has on the landscape around us.
Mark is obviously not afraid of getting his camera wet, capturing dramatic images of waves leaping over the shoreline, spreading seaweed and debris over the promenades. These contrast against the serene seascapes and lush, dream-like shots of the Manx coastline at sunrise and sunset.
’I thought ’Temporary States’ was good name for the exhibition,’ said Mark.
’It is based on the vagaries of the Isle of Man weather, where you can either have calm sunny scenes, beautiful sunsets or be faced with the angry weather.
’I wanted it to contain a plethora of weather conditions.
’I also wanted to show all sides of the island, the beauty of the landscape and the darker side too, how the weather can transform the place into something angry and brutal.
’I’ve included seascapes, landscapes, and also some of my favourite places I like to visit at different times of the day, either to walk around or to relax and just hang out at.’
The photographs range from beautifully captured, striking colour prints to graphic and highly descriptive black and white images, and take in a wide variety of Manx scenes, from sprawling landscapes to the jagged edges of the coastlines, displaying the variety and contrast of the island perfectly.
Photographing the island is something of a departure for Mark. He is an experienced travel photographer and writer, having wandered extensively throughout the world, from the Far East to Alaska and from the top to the bottom of South America, capturing and documenting his experiences.
The exhibition is open during the Mananan Festival of the Arts, which begins on Monday, June 19 and finishes on Saturday, July 1.
