The second and final traffic roundel has been completed in the Douglas promenade works.
This one is located at the Church Road Marina junction, at the end of the Loch Promenade.
It appears to be geometrically ’rounder’ than its oval-shaped counterpart further up along the prom by the Villa Marina, which attracted international headlines for the potential confusion it would cause drivers.
The Douglas Promenade Refurbishment website (MyProm) does however clarify that the thick white lines on the roundels are not driving lines, but a ’decorative pattern’.
The MyProm website further explains: ’The design philosophy behind the refurbishment of the promenade is to create a low-speed environment that promotes inclusivity for all users including pedestrians, cyclists, horse trams and vehicles.
’The roundels form just one aspect of this philosophy and help raise a driver’s awareness of the slow speed environment, making the junction more conspicuous and enhancing the driving experience and safety.’
It adds that they are to be driven in the same way as any other roundabout, despite the lack of a traditional central island.
