Three former Manx Grand Prix racers who took humanitrian aid to Syria and Romania will tell of their experiences on Friday.
Ian Pert, Jim Hunter and Ronnie Russell took a van-load of donated items to Romania in 2015 and to the Syrian border in 2017, and the talk will include a live video link up with some of the Syrian refugees still living in tents on the Turkey/Syria border waiting to return home.
Ian, who works for a children’s charity, Heads Up, in Scotland, has written a book about the first trip to Romania, proceeds from which will go to charity. ’We wanted to tell people what we did and why, so that’s part of the reasoning behind the talk,’ he said.
’There will be a live link with our contact in Tamar, who will be in one of the refugee camps that we visited. When you see people who genuinely have nothing, it really opens your eyes.’
The presentation will include a slide show, a question and answer session and talks from representatives of the other charities supported, which included the Billy Redmayne Memorial Fund, the Manx Grand Prix Supporters’ Club, the ACU Benevolent Fund and the Kent Air Ambulance.
Anyone attending has the option of a meal as well but this has to be booked in advance before Wednesday evening, at a cost of £10.
Without food, entry to the event is £5 or free to anyone who supported the trips.
The event is October 12 at Ramsey Masonic Hall and the doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.
