An amber weather warning has been issued by the government.

It is in place from 6pm today to 11am tomorrow (Saturday). Severe gale force northwest winds are expected across the island and will average 40 to 50mph with gusts of up to 65mph.

There will be further increases through the evening to storm force with gusts of 70 to 75mph before veering north by midnight but remaining severe gale force.

The government has said: ‘This is likely to cause travel disruption on land, sea and air, as well as some structural damage to buildings and trees.

‘This is especially the case due to the unusual nature of winds of this strength from this particular wind direction.’

Meanwhile, Peel Commissioners have chosen to reschedule the Christmas market in the town from tomorrow (Saturday) to December 4 due to the strong winds. Two sailings have also been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions. Heysham to Douglas at 2:15pm today (Friday) won't be sailing. The Douglas to Heysham sailing this morning was also cancelled. Passengers are being urged to contact reservations on 01624 661661 or 08722 992 992 to make alternative arrangements.The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is also strongly advising people to avoid forests and glens during this time. It said: 'Anyone who does visit should take extra care.'
