Virginia Dowty and her prized pooch put their best paw forward to scoop a major prize at Crufts.
Virginia, aged 68, from Ballasalla, and her four-year-old Australian silky terrier Amoroso claimed the prestigious Best of Breed award for the class in the Toy group.
’It’s quite amazing, and quite terrifying as well - but it’s a big honour,’ said Virginia.
’We’ve been coming to Crufts for a very, very long time and we just enjoy it, it’s a very enjoyable week.
’Australian silky terriers are very much terriers, but they are also very toy-like because of their size.
’They have an amazing coat which is just like human hair. They are very, very loyal, very lively and they just make wonderful pets.’
About 27,000 dogs visited the NEC during the four-day event run by The Kennel Club, with just under 21,000 dogs from 220 different breeds competing for a chance to win Best in Show.
’Amo’s mental, absolutely mental - he rules the house,’ added co-owner Julie Connolly.
’He’s the total boss and very strong-willed. But he loves to just lie on the bed and sleep with us and things.
’He was very terrier-like [in the ring], which is what he should be.
’He moves very well and he’s quite mature as well.At home he’s just part of the family though, a really lovely family pet.’
