Members of an aquacise class have hosted a charity a dinner dance and afternoon tea party to raise £1,700 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group, who meet at the Palace Hotel in Douglas, decided to fundraise for Macmillan after hosting a successful coffee morning for the cancer charity last year.

Susan Beard, from Onchan, helped organise the dinner dance at the Palace Hotel, and an afternoon tea party at one of the class members’ homes in Baldrine, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Macmillan’s Coffee Morning.

The two events were attended by around 130 people in total and raised £1,760 for people living with cancer - taking the grand total raised over the two years to £3,460.

Susan said: ’After hosting such a successful coffee morning for Macmillan last year, we decided to do something bigger and better to mark the 30th anniversary of the charity’s flagship fundraiser.

’Both events were a great opportunity to dress up and get together and have a good time, whilst also raising much-needed money for such a worthwhile cause.

’Macmillan is almost entirely funded by donations, so every penny raised will help them provide vital medical, emotional and financial support, to people living with cancer.

’We were delighted to raise such a fantastic sum, which will enable Macmillan to help people living with cancer when they need it most.’

Susan, who is already planning further fundraising events for Macmillan in 2021, was assisted by Jacqueline Ward, Marie Ellison, Arlene Magee and Margaret Cain from theb class.

They were also supported by other members of the group and several local businesses, which provided raffle prizes.

Macmillan has helped fund many posts, projects and services on the Isle of Man over the years, such as specialist nurses and the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre at Noble’s Hospital, and also played a part in assisting and developing cancer care on the island.
