Taking more of a fun and quirky look at Manx-inspired themes and art has inspired the latest collection of work by one of the island’s up-and-coming artisan crafters.

Felicity Wood opened her exhibition ’Er yn Ellan’, translated as ’On the Island’ at the community art gallery at Mother T’s, on new Road Laxey, last weekend.

The exhibition is a collection of many of Felicity’s bright and colourful paintings, ceramics drawings and sketches of designs, inspired by Celtic knot work and the Manx language.

’What I have tried to do is have my own twist on Celtic knots and doing things differently,’ said Felicity.

’Its design is inspired by Celtic designs, celebrating the Manx language and coming up with a variety of forms from the ceramics to the water colours that reflect the culture, art, landscape and language of the island, and using many different mediums to show those designs.

’There is a range of different designs and styles and techniques used that makes them quite idiosyncratically Manx.’

Felicity has her own brand, ’Felicity Wood Designs’ which she sells her creations on a range of merchandising and is aiming to launch her business on the back of the exhibition, which was originally intended to take place in March, earlier this year.

’This exhibition is exactly as it should have been, six months ago,’ she said.

’I had everything made and have since had this exhibition sat in boxes around my kitchen and one problem I have had is to try not to part with as many pieces as possible.

’Literally two weeks before the island went into lockdown was when I should have been hanging everything for this exhibition.

’I was getting to the point where I thought it wasn’t going to happen, that I would just get to September and think that it would just not take place.

Some of the pieces here ’I just haven’t seen for a while, as I had them made and wrapped, ready to transport that day.

’They have stayed like that since, so it is quite nice to be reunited, so to speak, with some pieces, as I hadn’t seen them for such a long time.

’Er yn Ellan’ is open to view at Mother Ts , which is open on Wednesday, from 12pm to 4pm and 10am and 4pm Thursday to Saturday.
