A limited edition piece of art work by the notorious and anonymous graffiti artist Banksy has been put up for sale through the Sayle Gallery, in Douglas.
The picture is entitled ’The Grin Reaper’, and depicts a hooded death-like figure, sat on top of the famous Big Ben clock face, with a beaming, face peering out from under its cowl.
The limited edition screen print, certified as authentic by Banksy’s own, ’Pest Control’ and signed by the artist himself, has been offered for sale on behalf of a private owner and, apart from a short period of public display, the painting will only be able to be viewed by appointment.
It is believed that this is the first time the iconic artist has had a piece of work on display on the island and Carola Rush, from the Sayle Gallery, hopes that the painting will be bought and kept on the island.
’As far as we are aware, this is the first time Banksy has had work on the island,’ said Carola. ’We have heard of a Manksy operating here but Banksy has not made it to our shores himself, or themselves if Banksy is a collective.
’But then again, how would we know, as Banksy remains infamous for his closely guarded anonymity.’
Normally found spray-painted across buildings, Banksy has created a huge movement based around funny and striking spray-painted and stencilled images that frequently juxtapose violent images and scenes with innocent and child-like imagery.
Originating from Bristol, Banksy has created artworks all over the world and even stencilled nine images on the Wall of Bethlehem.
’His work is renown for its contentious nature and the name Banksy has become synonymous with witty but often dark, social and political comment,’ said Carola.
’This picture depicts the Grim Reaper with the iconic yellow smiley face.
’It is a symbol that has sort of slipped into our culture, and a symbol that many of us use everyday as an emoji in digital messaging.
’It is perhaps ironic that the old structure of Big Ben is struggling and in need of major renovation to ensure its survival, whereas the smiley face is alive and well and undergoing many diversifications within new digital media.
’It would be lovely if this certified print by Banksy could stay here and, in a small way, keep the Isle of Man on the Banksy map.’
A viewing of the Banksy artwork can be arranged at the Sayle Gallery by contacting Carola on 674557 or by email to [email protected].
The print will be available for a limited time to view at the gallery between 2pm and 5pm today (Thursday).
