Our fascination with small things will be the subject of a talk at an event next month.
Bestselling author and journalist Simon Garfield will be the guest speaker at the event and he will be talking about his latest book, ’In Miniature’.
Mr Garfield is the author of a number of non-fiction books including A Notable Woman, To the Letter, On the Map, and winner of the Somerset Maugham literary prize, The End of Innocence.
He has also written for newspapers such as The Independent and The Observer.
Due for release later this month, In Miniature investigates our peculiar interest with small things and what they can tell us about our wider world.
Bringing together history, psychology, art and obsession, it explores flea circuses, miniature crime scenes, microscopic food, model villages and railways and a dozen more intricately-examined pursuits.
The event is organised on behalf of the Manx Blind Welfare Society, whose volunteers’ coordinator and events organiser, Debbie Thomson, said: ’We are delighted to secure Simon as a guest for this year’s author’s breakfast. He is a fascinating individual and respected non-fiction author and journalist, discovering the charm of the everyday world through his literature.
’It’s fantastic that Simon’s visit to the island coincides with the release of his latest book - we’re really looking forward to welcoming him as our guest.’
She thanked the Lexicon Bookshop for helping to secure Mr Garfield for the event, which helps fund the work done by the charity in the island.
’The breakfast is a highly anticipated event and a highlight of the MBWS calendar, so we would advise booking tickets early to avoid disappointment,’ Mrs Thompson added.
The author’s breakfast will be held at Mount Murray Golf Club on Monday, November 26.
Tickets cost £25, including a full English breakfast, are available by calling 674727 or emailing [email protected].
The Manx Blind Welfare Society supports more than 500 blind and visually impaired people in the Isle of Man, and relies entirely on donations and legacies.
