Repairs to a storm-damaged roof at Pulrose power station have been largely completed - and have involved one of the biggest and most complex crane lifts seen in the island in recent years.
Part of the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine roof was ripped off by Storm Doris in February last year.
It was stabilised and waterproofed ahead of specialist repairs being carried out this year. Following a detailed tendering exercise, a specialist in ’Keybemo’ roofing from the UK was appointed, supported by a team of local contractors.
The final repair to the damaged roof sheets was substantially completed on May 10 by Border Steel Structures. Teams will return following the TT. The repair has involved rolling six new 40 metre roof sheets at ground level, then craning the sheets 30m into the air on a lifting frame.
Thanks to the skill of local crane and civil engineers and a spell of calm dry weather, the sheets were landed onto the roof without a hitch - and then fitted and crimped into place.
The opportunity was taken to strengthen this northern verge of the roof, to ensure it is able to withstand any severe weather events in future. Scaffolding costs alone have totalled £110,000.
