Tweed jackets and moustache-wearing motorcyclists will take to island roads to raise funds for prostate cancer and mental health causes.

Following last year’s success, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride will take place once again on Sunday (September 29) and will see men and women dressed in their finery on classic and vintage-style bikes.

The event will raise donations towards the initiative’s official partner - the Movember Foundation - which funds projects around the globe to prevent male suicide and support prostate cancer research.

More than 70 people in the island have already signed up to take part.

They will be joining thousands across the globe as part of the world-wide event.

Bikers will set off at 11am from the Grandstand in Douglas.

Organiser Karl Millar, from St John’s, first brought the fun initiative to the island in 2018 after participating in a similar event in Chester.

He said: ’In Chester I thought: "Why isn’t anyone doing this in the Isle of Man? It’s the bike mecca.".’

One reason for taking part in the event was that he knew he’d enjoy being involved in something that gathered people with a shared interest in classic bikes.

Mr Millar added: ’Mental health is also quite close to my heart as I have a few friends who have been affected by it.’

He hopes the event will lead to more men getting prostate checks and seeking mental health advice.

’We know what blokes are like,’ he said.

’They say: "Oh, I’ll be fine" and "It will go away".’

Last year 56 people signed up to the event on the website and then some 110 people turning up on the day.

Riding a classic-looking Ducati Scrambler himself, Mr Millar has asked members of the public who want to participate to sign up on the website.

This provide him with a better figure of who’s coming to help prepare safety measurements.
