What better way to put a couple of years of a pandemic and other assorted awfulness behind you, than with a cheery Christmas single?
And who better to serenade you with such a song over the festive period that the island’s very own Biskee Brisht?
The indie-folk six piece released their second seasonal single ’Christmas Morning’ this week, following on from last year’s festive offering ’(Christmas) Maybe Next Year’.
And to whet your appetite for their jolly and cheery festive number, possibly featuring kids choirs and jingly bells, here’s singer and song writer Ruby Biscoe-Taylor to describe it to you.
’It’s about disappointment, stagnation, depression, fear - all the things we’ve been feeling after these crazy two years,’ ho-ho-ho’d Ruby.
In all seriousness, the song is a soft, swaying and melancholic song about the memories and feelings stirred up around Christmas time, when you really want it to be the simpler time you remember from childhood.
’You can’t help but remember the things you’ve lost, like time, people, pets, my prized collection of Sylvanian Families (don’t ask),’ she said.
’At Christmas time, you reflect on happy memories, but like waking up in the warm glow of a great dream, it’s bittersweet when you have to get up for work.
’But like Christmas, the song is filled with hope from the first line: "Someday I’ll be able to live out my dream".
’That’s not a might or a maybe, that’s a "will".’
Despite its melancholy, it’s a lovely and enjoyable song, filled with brass and accordions, and written and recorded on the feel of the song at the Ballagroove Studios in Ballasalla with producer Gyp Buggane, rather than a strictly regimented process.
’In the past I’ve been quite strict about rehearsing parts before we go into the studio, but Christmas Morning was a lot more organic, more improvisational,’ she said.
’Each member went into the studio and played what came to them in the moment.
’Lyrically and musically, Christmas Morning is a very simple song, but its gentle beginning builds into a dreamy haze filled with accordion, brass and percussion.’
Christmas Morning is available to listen, stream and download from all streaming platforms including Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Bandcamp and more.
