Images of the bridges which will provide a link for walkers and cyclists from Douglas to Kirk Michael have been released.

The Department of Infrastructure is reinstating the former railway bridges at Glen Wyllin, Glen Mooar and across the A1 near Ballaleece, St John’s.

Construction on the scheme is expected to get under way later this year, and is forecast to cost £1.3m.

The project follows the recent successful completion of improvements to the Heritage Trail and will extend the route a further seven miles north from St John’s.

DoI Minister Tim Baker said: ’This next phase once again aims to increase the number of recreational opportunities for people to get out and enjoy our countryside in a range of ways.

’While the plans follow the successful Peel-Douglas project, they have been designed to reflect the specific surroundings and will provide something really special and long-lasting.

’Replacing the three bridges promises to bring spectacular results for residents as well as tourists, once we are in position to welcome them back.’

The designs take inspiration from the original bridges built to carry steam trains. A steel frame will be clad in perforated metal sheets, allowing users to see out, while the deck will be constructed from composite material

Officers from the DoI will deliver a presentation on the plans at Michael School on Wednesday August 12 at 7.30pm.
