Images of the newly unveiled crop of painted circles at the bottom of Broadway have caused a stir.
The design has been compared to a maze, a helicopter landing pad and an archery target face, on social media.
In fact, it’s a roundel and a similar one is being painted on the Church Road Marina junction.
Infrastructure Minister Tim Baker MHK says drivers will ’soon get used to them’.
In a move to reassure the public, the Department of Infrastructure has issued a clarification that the roundels should be driven around in the same way as any other roundabout.
They are designed without the traditional central island or a white domed marking.
The department has pointed out that this design principle was part of the planning approval, with visuals provided and shared on the MyProm website since the scheme began.
Both roundels are sited in the 20mph speed limit for Douglas promenade and, says the DoI, will act to calm traffic.
The temporary exit off the promenade up Broadway reopened yesterday (Monday) and the junction should be fully operational from July 15.
Mr Baker said: ’Roundels are part of modern highway design, having been used in the UK for a number of years.
’I feel, once the overall area is complete, motorists will soon get used to them.’
