Law firm boss James Quinn has spoken about the difficult decision to make four members of his leadership team redundant, as he repositions the independent family company to its ’core values’ of serving island clients.

The managing director established Quinn Legal in 2009 and has since grown the company.

Two years ago, Mr Quinn formulated plans to expand the business in line with his vision to grow and become more than just a law firm.

He said: ’We are well-known as a trusted Isle of Man law firm who pride ourselves on providing an exceptional legal service to our clients in a friendly and approachable environment and for the experience to be a positive one.

’As part of our strategy we decided to take on more specialist staff in order to grow our professional service offering internationally.

’As we grew, I was concerned that we were starting to become a faceless, corporate services business and it was important, therefore, to return the core business to a local level.’

He added: ’I like us being a local practice, a really good Isle of Man law firm looking after the people on this island.

’It is with great sadness, however, that we have had to make the difficult decision of making these redundancies and let go of four members of our team.’

Speaking exclusively to Business News from the office in Ridgeway Street, Douglas, Mr Quinn, who admits being something of a ’maverick’ in the island’s law scene, said he has remained in contact with the four people, all non-lawyers, who were drafted in to form his leadership team to move forward his ambitious plans.

He said: ’They were all great at what they did in various areas such as HR, compliance and marketing and I wish them well for the future.’

Mr Quinn, who has been at the helm of Quinn Legal for about 10 years after previously being involved in other law firms, said he was keen to speak out to quell any rumours about the business.

He stressed: ’We are really busy, and this year has been one of our best, particularly in property conveyancing.

’The Isle of Man is simply the best place in the world to practise as a lawyer and the company has been growing over the years.’

He added: ’I think that part of the problem was that we wanted to grow to be a larger company with greater international and London links.

’We had ambitious plans with the leadership team to achieve this, but this became a distraction to us being a revered local practice.’

As for the year ahead, he said: ’Watch this space for we have some exciting announcements to make.

’The main thing is that we have a great team of people at Quinn Legal and doing what we do best as a local law firm, and long may this be the case.’
