Enterprising Louisa Thomas is making a name for herself by carving out a new business making cookie dough.
Louisa, 35, of Windsor Terrace, Douglas, says she is the island’s first supplier of ready-to-eat cookie dough.
She started the company herself as she had been struggling to find a full time job for some time.
Previously she had worked for an island bank for several years but says she has never looked back since going it alone.
She stresses she wanted to create a brand that ’was modern and fun.’
Hence the name of the business which is Evil Eye Unbakery.
She originally planned to call the business Cocomofo but she ran into a problemwith the Companies Registry.
She told Business News: ’We had to come up with another name to replace Cocomofo.
’I contacted the companies registry to register the name. But they said part of the name was not appropriate.
’Theysaid it was short for something else.’
’I wasn’t going to argue with them.’
Louisa added: ’I started the company myself several months ago as I’ve been struggling to find a full time job for several years and decided to create my own income stream.
’I originally looked at making traditional cookies as cupcakes are already popular, but after a weekend of experimenting I decided to try unbaked cookie dough instead.
’It’s a huge trend in the US right now where it’s served in scoops like ice cream, but I make bite-size heart-shaped pieces with our signature chocolate layer on the base.
’I wanted to create a brand that was modern and fun, so I create my own recipes like "Evil Eye" (mango, passionfruit and cayenne pepper), "Thyme Lord" (lemon & thyme), "Sage Advice" (blackberry & sage) and "Nothing Rhymes With Orange" (fresh orange zest with cinnamon & ginger). We sell at local markets and we’ve just set up an online "cookie dough by post" service.
Louisa is helped by her fiance, teacher Chris, 33. He said they love taking the product to sell at markets where they have built upa rapport with other traders.
Louisa is also very music minded. She plays the ukelele, piano and flute for a start.
She is also involved in directing a musical quartet of women called Ursula.
Ursula vocal group was created in 2016 to offer bespoke performances for weddings, parties and special events.
Vocal arrangements are written and taught by Louisa so clients can choose from the existing varied repertoire or request specific commissions.
The repertoire ranges from pop and rock covers to movie soundtracks and musicals.
She is also involved in the Meraki Choir, a community choir based in Douglas.
Meraki is a Greek word which means ’to do something with soul, creativity or love’.
The group focuses on modern songs ranging from Daft Punk and Foo Fighters to Birdy and Rihanna, with Louisa writing and teaching unique vocal arrangements for each one to create Meraki’s unique sound. The group was created in 2016 to support local charities and community events with fun, live performances. Singers attend Monday night rehearsals and put in a little practice in between.
