Why should local businesses care about the Sustainable Development Goals? (SDG).

That’s the question Steve Kenzie, executive director of the UN Global Compact UK Network, will be answering in a free breakfast talk for businesses at the Sefton Hotel, Douglas, on Friday, September 6.

Steve has been invited to the island by the One World Centre, the Isle of Man’s development education charity, as part of their awareness-raising activities around global issues that affect us all.

A spokesman said he will explain why businesses everywhere should be taking notice of the SDGs, how supporting them presents an opportunity to gain the trust of stakeholders and society in general, and how they also offer a compelling strategy for business growth and innovation.

Open to leaders and senior managers of Manx-based businesses both large and small, this is a chance to find out more and learn why the global goals should not just inform CSR (corporate social responsibility) strategy but key business plans and decisions as well.

One World Centre coordinator Wendy Shimmin said: ’We’re delighted that Steve has agreed to visit and share his insights with businesses on the Isle of Man.

’More and more businesses in the UK and elsewhere are beginning to incorporate the SDGs into their growth strategies and company policies.

’It will be enormously helpful to better understand the drivers behind this and why embracing sustainability makes good business, as well as social, sense.’

The event is free to attend but tickets must be booked via Eventbrite.

A light breakfast will be served from 7.50am with the talk beginning around 8.20am.

The One World Centre is the current recipient of the Isle of Man Government’s Development Education and Awareness Raising Grant and is a Manx registered charity.
