An award-winning eco-home construction firm is to be wound up - with the loss of 13 jobs.

Complete Construction Services Limited, based at the Balthane industrial estate, was named as a winner in last year’s Built It awards for building the best eco-house in Britain.

But this week it was announced that the company is going into voluntary liquidation with managing director James Vickers blaming ’circumstances beyond our control’.

Mr Vickers said in a statement: ’It is with the greatest sadness and regret that I have to announce the voluntary liquidation of Complete Construction Services Ltd.

’We have traded successfully for 24 years and had a good order book of projects to commence but due to circumstances beyond our control we were unable to continue.

’We are incredibly grateful to all our staff, customers, sub-contractors and suppliers who have supported us over the years and we bitterly regret any loss, inconvenience or hardship any may have suffered as a result of our closure.’

He added: ’One final regret is that despite introducing the technology to build the best eco-house in the whole of the UK we have been unable to persuade government to build this way.

’We were encouraged though by the number of private clients that could see the value and benefits and encourage them to see that this is the future of construction.’

Mr Vickers confirmed to the Manx Independent that the company employed 13 people but he didn’t want to comment further.

Corvalla, a four-bed house sitting high on the Howe Road above Port St Mary, was build by Complete Construction Services in 2015 and is said to be the most energy efficient house in the Isle of Man.

It is so smartly insulated, design efficient and air tight, that a traditional central heating system is unnecessary.

Energy demand is reduced by up to 90% and a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system changes the air several times an hour. With solar panels it would be a fully zero carbon development.

Mr Vickers said when the house was shortlisted for the eco award: ’The adoption of this type of development will benefit the island in so many ways and not just with the vastly reduced running costs and improved comfort levels.

’If we were given continuity of passive construction projects there is a wonderful opportunity to attract new workforce into the construction sector.’
