When Tesco opens its doors on Tuesday morning, it will only be allowing one person per household to enter the building with each shop.
Mike Hallwood, a member of the store’s management team, posted on Facebook outline the latest steps being taken in light of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Mr Hallwood said that the company was taking the measure to comply with ’social distancing guidelines that have been issued by the Isle of Man Government and all authorities across the world’.
Despite calls by the public for more delivery slots to be made available, Mr Hallwood said this simply isn’t possible as the store is itself missing staff due to the isolation laws.
He added: ’To give you some context, we currently process approximately 35,000 transactions per week. If every transaction has two adults this becomes 70,000 people passing through the store.
’This is before we even start to factor in people who are bringing their children with them.
’It is simply not worth the risk bringing your entire family shopping just to get them out of the house.
’Please also think about why you are attending our store. Please plan your meals and shop accordingly. You do not need to expose yourself to unnecessary risk just for a daily £3 meal deal.
’I’m pleading with all of you to help us with this, this is to protect my friends, colleagues, and yourselves. We are all in this together.’
Mr Hallwood accepted that some people, such as single parents, may struggle to get into the store under the new rules but that we all must find way to do this, whether that means someone else doing our shopping or making other arrangements.
He noted that due to how busy Tesco has been in the recent weeks, children could come into contact with up to 12 people per minute, without counting the staff and that it ’really isn’t worth the risk’.
Mr Hallwood added: ’To reiterate, this is to follow government protocol. I understand this is not an ideal situation to be in, but this is something we simply must do.
’With regards to delivery slots. Please remember that whilst many of you are going into isolation, I also have colleagues that have had to go into isolation.
’As a result it makes it extremely difficult to cover our normal deliveries.
’This combined with the fact that I cannot recruit any drivers as they have to be individually assessed by a company approved assessor from across which makes it an impossible situation.
’We also do not have the space for more vans or storage of the goods that customers order.’
