Should we always follow the money?
That’s the topic of the latest public meeting organised by the Positive Action Group on Monday November 25.
Louise Whitelegg , Isle of Man co-ordinator for Christian Aid, and Archibald Elliot from the island’s Student Climate Network, will put the case for the government to rethink its investment strategy in the wake of its declared Climate Emergency.
Mrs Whitelegg will talk about how the Manx government is persisting with an agreement to award a gas exploration licence in Manx waters - while pledging for the island to go carbon-zero by 2050.
The theory is that revenue raised from gas exploration will go towards funding green initiatives in the future.
But Mrs Whitelegg says it adds up to a confusing message for the public.
She is calling for the government to divest its £42m held in gas and oil assets.
’This is really the only sensible option,’ she says.
The meeting at the Manx Legion Club starts at 7.30pm and is free and open to all.
