Beach Buddies is leading a campaign to install a CCTV camera system at the entrance to the Marine Drive in Douglas in an attempt to stop a sharp rise in the number of incidents of fly-tipping.
The charity has been publishing appeals for support on its website and social media pages for some years, but it has not prevented an increase in the amount of fly-tipping on one of the island’s most scenic coastlines.
’This has now gone over the edge, literally,’ said Beach Buddies founder Bill Dale.
’We all try to be tolerant, but there is a small minority of the population who are forever making a mess of things for the vast majority. Enough is enough.’
The charity has launched an appeal for sponsorship of a CCTV system to be installed at the entrance to the Marine Drive, to pin-point when items have been thrown over the cliffside.
Television sets, fridges, cookers, mattresses and computers are common finds at the bottom of the Marine Drive cliff face.
However, Beach Buddies says it’s not just the Marine Drive suffering from an increase in fly-tipping.
’In only the last few months Beach Buddies has seen a significant increase in the amount of commercial and domestic waste dumped in the 38 bins we have around the island. Building materials have recently become the majority of what we find, but we also find loads of domestic items like computers and TVs.
’We even found a small fridge in one of our bins one day.
’In most cases - which makes it more unbelievable - virtually all of the items being thrown over the Marine Drive and into our bins do not incur any charges at the amenity sites.
’These people could be fined up to £2,500 for fly-tipping, when all they have to do is drive to the amenity site and drop it off - for nothing.
’It beggars belief.’
