The Isle of Man Choral Society has accepted an invitation to sing the world premiere of a new work by Sir Karl Jenkins in the Isaac Stern Auditorium Carnegie Hall in New York on Monday, January 15, 2018.

The concert, at which Sir Karl Jenkins will be present, is with a professional orchestra and conductor, Dr Jonathan Griffith.

Dr Griffith wrote to Julian Power, conductor and musical director of Choral Society, saying: ’IOMCS received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers.’

As the singers will have to pay for their travel and accommodation for the five days and four nights in New York, it is likely to cost them about £1,500, so not all are able to attend.

So Choral Society is inviting other experienced singers to join IOMCS for the event. Membership will entitle them to sing with Choral Society for their 2018 Verdi Requiem concert on March 18, 2018.

The choir that visited New York for the similar Sir Karl Jenkins concert this January reported to Julian Power that it was ’an outstanding success, very well organised and a wonderful experience’.

To find out more, full details and an application form will be available at Choral Society concert on Sunday, April 2.

At 2.30pm on Sunday, April 2, in the Villa Marina, accompanied by the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra, the Choral Society will be singing Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise.

This work, part of his second symphony, features the duet ’I waited for the Lord;, which will be sung by Karen Elliott and Mandy Griffin, and the hymn tune, ’Now Thank we all our God’.

Two other short works will be performed, Rutter’s Gloria and Mascagni’s Easter Hymn supported by Meadowside Choral Society.

IOMSO will the perform a rendition of Mascagni’s most Intermezzo - currently in Classic FM’s top 30 favourite classical pieces.
