The Ramsey commissioner in charge of the town’s parks, Billy Hankin, has praised the pupils of Bunscoill Rhumsaa for their gardening skills.

Mr Hankin was speaking at the conclusion of this year’s Ramsey Commissioners’ daffodil-growing competition, which sees the authority’s parks department provide pupils with daffodil bulbs, planting compost, a pot and growing instructions. The bulbs are grown by the children at home then brought to school for judging.

Presenting the certificates for best decorated pot and best overall bulb, Mr Hankin said: ’It’s been great to see that while, from an early age, children today are skilled in the use of computer technology, planting a bulb and nurturing it to grow into a flower can still inspire a child.

’With the support of their families and teaching staff the pupils of Bunscoill Rhumsaa have clearly taken the challenge seriously and produced some outstanding results. I congratulate them all for taking part in a competition the Commission has been proud to stage for 38 years.’

In the best decorated pot category Mr Hankin presented certificates to Zoe Brown, third place; Oliver Child, runner-up and Daisy Liddle, first place.

The certificate for best overall bulb went to Eugene McKiernan.
