Onchan Commissioners have backed a plan to build an obelisk on the headland above Port Jack beach.

Visit Isle of Man, the government’s tourism agency, approached the authority for permission to install the 1.8-metre-high feature.

The stone pillar will have directional information engraved on it, and forms part of a greater effort to improve signage along the Raad Ny Foillan coastal footpath./

Similar obelisks are planned for Peel, Port Erin and Ramsey, to try to enhance the ’visitor experience’, and provide walkers with a photo opportunity.

At a meeting last week, commissioners welcomed the proposal, but said they require further information on designs and maintenance of the feature before formally granting permission.
