Ramsey Choral and Friends Winter Concert was held at St Paul’s in Ramsey on Saturday night.
The concert saw the Ramsey Choral Society teaming up with the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra and a host of local singers and musicians to perform music from Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Elgar, Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan, Lars-Erik Larsson and Gershwin as well as Manx folk songs.
The choir was joined by the Isle of Man Symphony orchestra, directed by Nigel Harrison along with pianist John Elliott; harpist Christa McCartney, who played and sang Manx folk songs, and clarinettist Chris Sullivan who played the second movement of Mozart’s clarinet concerto.
Vocal soloists Karen Elliott and Matt Quinn sang the soprano and baritone parts in a Lars-Erik Larsson’s lyrical suite ’A God Disguised’, which was having its island premier. This six movement piece for choir, orchestra and soloists also used a narrator, Chris Caine, to tell the story in the poetry of Hjalmar Gullberg between the movements.
The audience also enjoyed a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous ’Policeman’s Song’ from the musical Pirates of Penzance, featuring local singer Geoff Collier performing the role of the inimitable Sergeant of Police.
Ramsey Choral is a community choir without auditions: find out more on their Facebook page.
