There is some confusion as to when planned road works on a major Douglas road will start.

The Department of Infrastructure’s Roadwatch website has stated that beginning Monday, there will be major disruption to Lord Street, however the DoI now denies it is starting then.

The website, which informs residents around the island of pending road closures, has work listed for Lord Street beginning on Monday, June 10, carrying on until November 10.

It was stated this work would see the ’imposition of a temporary one way order’.

It added: ’Vehicles may only proceed in a westerly direction from Parade Street roundabout to Ridgeway Street.

’There will be associated closures of roads and footways, parking restrictions and the creation of a temporary bus stop as detailed in the attached document.’

A road sign on Lord Street also refers to the work beginning on Monday and continuing for 27 weeks.

The one-way order would run from the roundabout at Parade Street through to Ridgeway Street.

This would also see the pavement outside The Caff and Douglas library from Muckle’s Gate to Duke Street closed from Monday to July 3, with other sections of pavement closing throughout the works.

However, when the Courier contacted the DoI, the department said the roadworks were not due to start on Monday, despite the website and road signs placed by the department on the road, indicating the road works will begin then.

A DoI spokesman said: ’The work will not be starting on Monday - it is due to start soon, however, and an update will be provided next week.’

During the works, a number of parking bays on Ridgeway Street will be altered to ease the flow of traffic.

The changes to parking bays will include the spaces opposite the town hall on Ridgeway Street as well as the spaces near St Matthew’s Church on the road approaching the North Quay to allow for buses to turn onto the road as one of the bus stops on Lord Street will also be moving to the North Quay side of the car park.

It is not clear from the website what the works being carried out are, the only information given only refers to ’road works’.
