An army disposal team was called to Castletown after unexploded ordnance dating back to the Second World War was found on the beach.

A controlled explosion was carried out yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

It is believed to have been a shell carrying a starburst flare or smoke round rather than containing any high explosive.

But Kevin Scott of the Coastguard said it had still contained enough explosive to have caused serious injury.

The object was reported by a member of the public on Monday, 200 metres east of the car park at Hango Hill.

Photos were immediately sent to the British military Explosive Ordnance Disposal co-ordination centre and the object was identified as ordnance from the 1940s.

Castletown Coastguard kept the area safe and under observation until members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit were able travel to the Island and undertake a controlled explosion.

People are reminded to contact the Coastguard straight away using 999 if they locate an unusual or suspicious object on the coast.

Castletown Coastguard advised residents: ’If you spot any suspicious item on the beach, leave it where it is and report it to the Coastguard.
