A mast removed from a square in Douglas was done so because part of it was rotting and it is no longer safe.
Douglas councillors queried the removal of the mast and weathervane from Derby Square late last month.
Councillors Betty Quirk and John Skinner in particular quizzed chairman of the regeneration and community committee Councillor Stephen Pitts, as to why the structure was removed and where it is now.
In a written response, Mr Pitts said: ’The mast was found to be unsafe on October 29 and removed on October 30 ahead of forecasted high winds and storms.
’The structure is on the asset register and is inspected according to a schedule. Maintenance was undertaken in June 2020 and before that January 2019.
’The mast itself has been coated with a protective application, however, the rot on this occasion was found mostly below ground and rose upward.
’Similarly there was rot around the area where the cables and chains are connected to the mast. When looking to repair the mast, a possible solution to these areas of rot will be investigated.’
Mr Pitts said the council ’could have’ been told earlier about the mast being removed and that he will find out what is left of the mast and when it or something else can be installed in its place.
Council leader David Christian said it was ’not acceptable’ and that all members should’ve been informed of the decision. He hopes to see the mast and weathervane reinstated. He said: ’I know there are strong feelings,’
