Improvements to the BMX track in Noble’s Park are reliant on an agreement being signed between Douglas Council and BMX Isle of Man.
The BMX club had applied to the head of parks for assistance in improving the track to enable United Kingdom BMX to hold events in the island.
It had requested £7,700 of improvements to the course and a further £13,000 to be spent on a starting gate.
The club would arrange for a specialist company from the UK to undertake the work and maintain the track.
However, the head of parks’ report suggested entering into a formal agreement that would see BMX Isle of Man take over responsibility for the maintenance of the track and surrounding area.
This would also allow the involvement of a Manx Lottery Trust to purchase the starting gate.
If that proved unsuccessful, it was suggested it be considered for the council’s 2020-21 Budget.
An agreement could save the council some 150 man hours per year, at a value of £2,700.
The report suggested that funds from the Park Services revenue could be used to pay for the materials to carry out the works.
Chairman of the regeneration and community committee, which considered the proposal, Councillor Stephen Pitts, said that the council had ’previously spent a lot of money on the track’.
They were ’promised’ it would lead to competitions being held which had never happened,’ he said.
Mr Pitts said that before his committee would recommend paying out any money, he would need a lease to have been signed.
It was resolved that the council would seek further details on the club, which is said to have restructured, and for an update on the total amount it has spent since the track was created.
