A couple from South London have been visiting the island as part of their epic journey to visit all the railway stations in the British Isles.
Husband and wife Geoff Marshall and Vicki Pipe have gained a YouTube and Twitter following with people keen to follow their adventures which they call All the Stations.
Over the last weekend, they took in the steam railway, the Manx Electric Railway, the Snaefell Mountain Railway, the Groudle Glen Railway and even the Laxey Mines Railway.
The couple said that after completing England, Scotland, Wales and the island of Ireland, they had to visit the island for our unique railways.
Geoff told the Examiner they’ve never been to the island before, so were keen to learn about the island’s culture.
He added: ’Our taxi driver from the airport told us about saying hello to the fairies, the Moddey Dhoo and the connection between the island and Norway and Great Britain.’
For Geoff, the journey began with twice holding the world record for the quickest time to visit all of London’s Underground stations.
And when he looked he discovered there was no record for visiting all the train stations in Britain.
Vicki, who works at the London Transport Museum, said her interest lies in the social impact of the railways.
She added: ’It is amazing to meet people and learn about how the railways affect their lives, both places that still have lines and those that don’t anymore.’
Despite all of the grand stations they have visited, Geoff said his favourite places they’ve visited were smaller locations.
He said: ’I have a penchant for lesser used stations.
’So in Cumbria there is a line from Barrow that stops at some of the little stations like Braystones and Nethertown.
’The small places where few people go just have a certain charm to them.’
Speaking to the Examiner at the start of their trip, Vicki said: ’We’ve only been here a few hours, but it is great, there is certainly something romantic about going on a steam train.’
Using the full day to explore the line, they hopped off at a few locations including Santon and Castletown before meeting a fan of theirs in Port Erin.
It originally had looked like they would struggle to fit in the Great Laxey Mines Railway.
However Vicki said that ’thanks to the volunteers at the railway, we’ve been able to fit it in. They’ve been really helpful.’
Ian Smith, director of the GLMR, said: ’We are delighted that the "All the Stations" team have found time in their hectic schedule to come down to what must be one of the smallest stations they are likely to visit.
’We might not be Waterloo or King’s Cross but we will still be on the same list as the big boys.’
