A 28-year-old Douglas man has been fined £200 for being drunk in a public place.

Ryan Anthony Pope admitted the offence, which replaced an initial charge of being drunk and disorderly.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that police were outside 1886 bar in Regent Street on December 17 at 11.55pm.

Security staff at the bar said that Pope had been refused entry and he was subsequently asked to leave the area.

He was described as unsteady on his feet and acting belligerently.

Despite being asked to leave, Pope rejoined the queue to get into the pub and continued to be difficult until he was arrested.

Defence advocate Winston Taylor handed in letters of reference for his client as well as a letter from Pope himself.

Mr Taylor said: ’He has very little recollection of the incident. The letter refers to medication which explains part of the reason why he acted as he did.

’Mr Pope had not been drinking much alcohol but unfortunately it appears it reacted with the medication.’

Pope, who lives at Cedar Grove, was also ordered by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes to pay £125 prosecution costs which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £50 per month.
