A drink-driver who crashed her car in Ballasalla has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for 18 months.

Hayley Martha Bainton produced a blood test reading of 113 after her Mini Cooper collided with a parked vehicle and an oncoming one.

The legal limit is 80.

The 31-year-old, who lives at Glen Road, Colby, appeared before magistrates and admitted drink-driving and was also ordered by magistrates to retake her test at the end of the ban.

We previously reported that police were called to an accident at Douglas Road in Ballasalla on August 18 at 9.30pm.

Bainton’s Mini Cooper had collided with a stationary vehicle and an oncoming one.

At the scene she was described as unsteady on her feet, slurring her words, and having glazed eyes.

When asked by police if she had been drinking she said ’no’. She was then said to have struggled with police during her arrest which resulted in her being handcuffed.

The court heard that Bainton has a previous conviction for being drunk in charge of a vehicle in February, for which she was fined £1,000, and her licence was endorsed with 10 points.

Defence advocate James Peterson handed in a letter of apology from Bainton as well as letters of reference.

Mr Peterson said that the references showed that his client was a ’well thought-of young lady’.

’Ms Bainton has had a difficult past year to say the least,’ said the advocate.

’She had issues with her being stalked and as a result doesn’t feel safe in her own home.

’She has to some extent turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism.’

Mr Peterson asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea.

He continued: ’It was not the highest reading but she admits she was lucky no-one was injured.

’Ms Bainton has not driven since the incident.’

Magistrates also ordered her to pay £125 prosecution costs, which she will pay, along with the fine at a rate of £150 per month.
