Deemster Andrew Corlett has been official sworn in as the island’s new First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls.
Deemster Corlett took the Deemster’s Oath in a ceremony at Government House where he was presented with his warrant of appointment by Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney.
The First Deemster is President of the High Court in the island and Clerk of the Rolls, this position also makes Deemster Corlett Deputy Lieutenant Governor, filling in for Sir Richard when required.
Deemster Corlett said: ’I am honoured to take on this challenging role and to serve the crown and the people of this island.
’The administration of justice is as important to society as health and education, and I look forward to helping shape the future of our justice system.
’One of my aims while in office is to help the public gain a better understanding of the working of the island’s courts and tribunals.’
Deemster Corlett was called to the Manx and English Bars in 1984 and has worked in private and government practice, in areas such as commercial litigation and insolvency to employment law and human rights.
He has served as Second Deemster since 2011 and is well known in the island for presiding over the family court, having been appointed deputy Deemster in 2007 and Deemster in 2009.
He has also served in the appeals division.
Deemster Corlett replaces David Doyle, who stood down following Tynwald earlier this year and will officially join Cain Advocates later this year.
