A 27-year-old IT worker from Douglas has been fined £350 for being drunk and disorderly at a takeaway.

Robert William Hay was arrested after an incident at the Star Grill in Marina Road.

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks also ordered him to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court how police were called to the Douglas takeaway on February 6 at 1.22am.

Hay, who lives at Ballabrooie Close, was said to be shouting and swearing at staff and refusing to leave.

Staff said he had been refused service due to his manner.

When officers arrived Hay was still at the counter and said to be acting aggressively.

Other customers were said to be alarmed by his behaviour and he was subsequently arrested.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions, but a caution for a similar offence, nine years ago.

Defence advocate Sara-Jayne Dodge said: ’On the night in question, Mr Hay had been at a friend’s house drinking.

’He had some family news which hit him hard. He drank more than he usually would.

’He doesn’t usually go out, but he drank spirits which he does not normally do.

’Mr Hay spent the night in custody and wants to apologise to all those who witnessed the incident.’

Ms Dodge said that the police statement mentioned that Hay had apologised on numerous occasions.

Hay agreed to pay the fine and costs by March 15.
