A Ramsey man has been fined £430 for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Mark Roberts admitted the offence and was also banned from driving for six months under the totting up process.

Roberts, who lives at Close ny Mooragh, already had nine points on his licence and magistrates added another three for the latest offence.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court how 46-year-old Roberts was driving a Ford Focus on the Mountain Road on September 14 last year when he broke down at Guthrie’s Memorial.

Police arrived and arranged for the vehicle to be seized and taken to the test centre due to its poor condition.

A vehicle examiner found that there were faults with the steering, brakes, exhaust, and two tyres.

Defence advocate David Reynolds asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea.

The advocate said: ’Mr Roberts said he had only recently bought the vehicle. Clearly he hadn’t done sufficient checks to ensure it was roadworthy.’

Mr Reynolds said that his client no longer had the car as it had since been scrapped.

Magistrates chair Lisa Horton told Roberts: ’The car was not only a danger to you and your family but also to the public.’

He was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs, which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.
