Recruiting has begun for a new full-time Deemster and a number of part-time Panel Deemsters.
The full-time vacancy has arisen with the pending retirement of Deemster Alastair Montgomerie.
Deemster Montgomerie announced in July that he is retiring at the end of the year at the age of 66, after a distinguished career in the legal profession.
Applications for the role of Deemster are invited from qualified advocates, barristers or solicitors with at least 10 years’ experience and a high level of professional attainment.
Applications are also being sought for a number of part-time Panel Deemsters to assist the full-time members of the judiciary with their workload, including criminal trials, sentencing hearings, civil cases and family matters.
Deemster Montgomerie has performed high-profile roles in the island for the best part of 30 years.
Having joined the Attorney General’s Chambers in 1991 as a legal officer, he was promoted to chief prosecutor and in 2003 was appointed Deputy High Bailiff.
He became a part time Panel Deemster in 2004 and was promoted to Deemster in 2011, presiding mostly over the Court of General Gaol Delivery, a role he will perform until his retirement.
