As if being the island’s only professional snooker player was not enough, Colby’s Darryl Hill is now releasing his own music.
Darryl has recorded a classical piece, ’The Hills’, on the piano with mum, Jane Hill, at Ballagroove Studios in Ballasalla.
The track is available from Amazon music, iTunes and has a video on YouTube.
Darryl told the Manx Independent: ’I was brought up with music as my mum has been a musician all her life.
’She did her degree in music as a teenager and now privately teaches piano, saxophone and clarinet, as well as also playing saxophone in the Manx Swing Band, with whom she regularly plays on-island concerts with.
’I started to learn piano and clarinet at a very young age and at primary school I used to play piano in assembly to the hymns.
’I used to dread singing in assembly and we always sang to backing CDs when there was a piano sat in the corner so one day I asked the headteacher if I could start playing the hymns on the piano and he said yes and it became a permanent thing then.
’Since then I’ve just continued listening and playing to all kinds of music but mainly playing classical.’
Darryl said that ’The Hills’ took six or seven weeks to complete and the duo have already finished a second piece for later release.
So how did ’The Hills’ come about?
’One day mum said she’d had an idea for a melody and had written it down so we tried it on the piano,’ said Darryl. ’I liked it so then I built the song up, making the hands work a bit more and it was coming together well.
’For a while then we knew we needed a middle part or bridge section to be technical, and one day I was humming the tune to myself and automatically went into a new section. That night when I tried it on the piano it fit perfectly so that completed the song.’
The 20-year-old is currently at number 101 in the world snooker rankings.
And what would he choose between a number one hit and being world snooker champion?
’Definitely world snooker champion. That has been my life, it’s my career and that pays the bills. For now, this is a joint hobby mum and I share and we just have a song that we think is pretty decent and good to listen to and we want other people to be aware of it, buy it and just enjoy listening to it.’ Hear ’The Hills’ at www.amazon.co.uk, itunes or www.youtube.com
