Two expert dancers visited the Isle of Man to demonstrate why one of the latest dance crazes to hit the UK is so popular.

Matthew Lane and Nancy Hitzig were invited to the island to teach some moves and offer tips on swing dancing to the newly-formed Swing in the Isle dance group, at a special weekend held at the Embassy rooms, at the British Hotel.

They worked with groups of beginners on the Saturday, and then spent Sunday with around 25 improving dancers, helping them perfect their moves and steps.

Gráinne Sheard, from Swing in the Isle, said that all the members of the group, both new and old, gained a lot from learning with two UK professional dancers.

’It really was a lot of fun,’ said Gráinne .

’It is good to get that connection going with groups in the UK. Swing dancing is absolutely huge over there, and in many places across the world.

’It was also great to have two amazing swing dance teachers like Matthew and Nancy, as our group has really only just started up.

’They demonstrated their huge wealth of knowledge, experience and skill in such an accessible and engaging way, and were so generous with their time and advice.

’They taught us so much, and we focused on learning the Lindy Hop, and also some Charleston moves.’

Gráinne said that swing dancing has its roots in the Jazz and Jive culture between the 1920s and 1950s.

However, she said that it was the social aspect that makes swing dancing so special.

’It is about more than just the dancing and the music,’ she said.

’It is about a lifestyle, and the social life that builds up around it

’There is a huge emphasis put on the community of swing dancing, as well as cultivating an environment of mutual respect between you, your partner and fellow dancers at a social event.

’I adore that this is a social dance, and that you get to meet and dance with like-minded folks as well.

’It keeps you fit and active, the music, dance and style is awesome and it encourages inter-generational interaction.’
