This week sees the release of a debut single by a local group who specialise in creating, what they describe as ’dark dream pop’.

Raine, featuring multi-instrumentalists Suzy Manton and Martyn Cain, release their first single, ’Provoke’ tomorrow (Friday).

The duo create fluid and haunting soundscapes using a mix of guitars, bass and electronic drums, samples and sounds, and with ’Provoke’ say that they have tried to create a piece of music influenced by modern-day, dark television series.

’With "Provoke", we wanted to capture a contemporary cinematic ballad of self-destruction and loss,’ said Suzy.

’We think that the song would be suited to a Netflix thriller, to give people an idea of the vibe of the track.’

Having formed in 2017, Suzy said that Raine’s influences can be heard in material by bands and artists such as Moreton, Douglas Dare, Burial and Lana Del Rey.

Suzy herself is a singer and songwriter who writes and performs solo acoustic, folk influenced songs, while Martyn is better known as the bass player in the electronica and rock fusion group Post War Stories and the rock/rap crossover group Dusty Plankton.

’It is this crossover in genres that has created this dark "dream pop" project,’ said Suzy.

’Provoke’ will be available for download and streaming on all major platforms from Friday, April 24.
