Politicians from the north of the island are hoping a delayed housing scheme can be completed as soon as possible.
The Mayfield development on Queen’s Pier Road, Ramsey, should have been completed by spring this year.
Once complete, Mayfield will provide a 37-unit comprise 27 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom flats. It is being coordinated by the Ramsey and Northern Districts Housing Committee.
It will also allow for the development of Cooil ny Marrey, Waterloo Road, Ramsey, which has 55 units.
The RNDHC is made of representatives from Ramsey, Andreas, Ballaugh, Bride, Jurby, Lezayre and Maughold and provides sheltered housing in the north of the island.
Members of the committee contacted the Examiner with concerns over the delay following our report last week that Cummal Mooar Resource Centre, a residential home on Queen’s Promenade, is ’not fit for purpose’.
The members told us that they have concerns over the delays to Mayfield, which was behind schedule before Covid-19, and the impact this is having on those living in residential homes in the north of the island.
Education, Sport and Culture Minister Dr Alex Allinson, who is also MHK for Ramsey, told the Examiner that he is ’aware that RNDHC is concerned about delays in the completion of this important scheme’.
He added: ’The Mayfield project will provide modern and flexible sheltered accommodation and facilitate much needed development of Cummal Mooar.
’Whilst the state of emergency halted construction work earlier this year that has now restarted and I hope any technical issues with the design and construction can be overcome as soon as possible.’
Infrastructure Minister Tim Baker (Ayre and Michael) added: ’It is very disappointing that the much-needed Mayfield development in Ramsey has suffered these significant delays in its expected completion.
’Many constituents from across the north of the island are eagerly awaiting the delivery of this scheme, which will provide an excellent solution for their housing needs when it is available.’
’Every effort needs to be made to ensure Mayfield is completed as promptly as possible so that residents can start to move in.’
The Isle of Man Examiner has approached the clerk of the RNDHC to explain the delay behind the Mayfield scheme.
