Cutting-edge technology to help blind and partially-sighted people will be on display at an exhibition in Onchan next month.
The display is part of the Manx Blind Welfare’s Vision Awareness Week and will be at the society headquarters in Corrin Court. Vision Awareness Week, which runs from September 8 to 13, will concentrate on ’Making the Island Accessible’, with a different focus every day on how simple changes can be made to public places to help blind and visually-impaired people.
It is an annual initiative designed to publicise the challenges faced by the blind and visually-impaired people.
Some of the UK’s major technology manufacturers will display the industry’s latest technological developments at the island exhibition.
The Manx Blind Welfare Society’s volunteers’ coordinator and events organiser, Debbie Thomson, said: ’Although we have a substantial collection of equipment, most of which is available to loan free-of-charge to our members, we’re constantly researching the latest trends and developments in the industry and this is a fantastic opportunity to try the latest equipment and to talk to the suppliers for advice.
’It is also a chance for the local blind and visually impaired community to come along and find out more about technology that could have a hugely positive impact on their life. It creates a conversation and will help us find new and innovative ways to meet the wide-ranging needs of our members.’
The exhibition will take place from 10am to 4pm on Monday September 8, and 10am to 3pm on Tuesday September 9. Appointments aren’t necessary. Everyone is welcome to go along to find out more.
