It has been the driest summer in 26 years, the Met Office at Ronaldsway has revealed.

Taking the months of June, July and August together there was only 105.3mm of rain at the airport, 45% below average.

This makes it the driest summer since 1995.

The mean temperature for summer measured 15.5°C, compared to the long-term mean of 14.7°C, ranking it the fifth warmest summer on record.

The mean wind speed measured only 9.3mph, the lowest since 1983. An average summer would see a mean speed of 11.1mph.

There were 600.3 hours of bright sunshine, only slightly above the long-term mean of 593 hours.

August itself was a mixed month, ending with a completely dry spell from the 22nd.

Total rainfall at Ronaldsway in the month measured 46.1mm, which is only two thirds of normal, making it the driest August since 2005. The wettest day was the 21st when 13.5mm of rain fell.

The mean temperature for the month measured 15.5°C, only 0.1°C above the long-term mean.

The highest temperature of 21.6°C was measured on the 25th. Winds remained light, with a mean speed of 10.1mph, the lowest in August since 2003.

Often cloudy skies meant only 147.2 hours of bright sunshine.

This was 22% below normal. There were three days with fog observed.
