Students’ ’outstanding’ results are down to their hard work, support from staff and opportunities in the island, a head teacher says.

Annette Baker, Ramsey Grammar School’s head teacher since 2015, shared her delight at the results attained by pupils.

’We were very pleased with our results last year and our results this year are even better,’ she told the Examiner.

’We’ve had a lot of star performers and there was 4 A*s from one of our students, so really outstanding results.’

The school leader, who was previously the deputy head teacher at Ballakermeen High School for 30 years, says that the ’family’ feeling of Ramsey Grammar is ’part of the main ingredients for its success’.

’Ballakermeen High School was an amazing school, but since this school is smaller it really is like a family.

’I must give a big shout out to the staff who’ve gone above and beyond to support our students. They’ve spent hours and hours outside of school to help them and they are even here on results day. It’s a real team effort.’

She added: ’I’m really grateful we live in a place that supports other skills that are important for development, such as music and other areas.

’So much goes into making great students and it’s a good place to do your sixth form.’

She said students had been able to get involved with community service, Junior Achievement, and placements to Germany.

One student, Will Farrant, received Mansat sponsorhip to NASA, Houston. He later achieved full marks in his maths mechanic module.

Another pupil, Mera Royle, was named as the young folk musician of the year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards this year.

Those who studied A-level maths gained impressive results at the school this year.

Head of maths Michéal Flynn said: ’It’s been the biggest maths group we’ve ever had in the school and they’ve shown really solid results. I’m really pleased for them all.’

A level passes from every school are listed in this week’s Isle of Man Examiner, which is in the shops now.
