A school fundraising event has raised £2,076 for victims of the tsunami in Indonedia.

Children and staff from the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh in St John’s did a sponsored walk and run to see how many laps of the village’s Fairfield they could do.

It took place in October and they have now totted up how much they raised after sponsors made their donations.

Headteacher Julie Matthews said: ’The people there are still in need of help even though it is no longer foremost in the news.

’We decided to look into what we could do. We asked the One World Centre how we could donate and they pointed us in the direction of an organisation called the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee).

’It works with many organisations who bring aid to disaster-hit areas around the world.’

Children took sponsor forms home and ran and walked to the best of their abilities.

Mrs Matthews said: ’We would like to send a big thank you to all the mums and dads for organising the collections as well as to the children for all their hard work on the day and helping to collect the money.’

The earthquake, which led to the tsunami, took place on September 28 in the Minahasa peninsula, Indonesia.

Hundreds of people died and thousands were homeless afterwards.
