Pupils with disabilities took part in a programme which allowed them to try out new sports this week.

Eighty schoolchildren from 13 primary and secondary schools played badminton and were involved in boccia festivals at the National Sports Centre on Wednesday.

The festivals formed part of Manx Sport and Recreation’s (MSR) Disability School Sports Programme.

Ari Brooks, Disability Sports Development Officer with MSR, said: ’Our Strategy for Sport outlines how physical activity improves the lives of those with disabilities.

’The Disability School Sports Programme allows pupils to try sports in a fun and inclusive environment.

’It encourages pupils to continue their involvement in sport through other events and schemes MSR and schools offer.

’Pupils practised badminton and boccia in their schools in the lead-up to the festivals, developing balance, co-ordination, teamwork and social skills, and they enjoyed putting these skills to the test today,’ she added.

The Disability School Sports Programme began with football in November and will continue with Kwik cricket in March, athletics in June and tri-golf in July.
