The history department at Ramsey Grammar School takes over assemblies every year to mark Armistice Day and Holocaust Memorial Day.

This year in addition, to mark the 75th anniversary of D Day, which is officially known as Operation Overlord, year 9 students (aged 13 and 14) have worked with teachers to produce assembly presentations to commemorate the events of June 6, 1944, and beyond, when Allied armies invaded northern France.

The presentation consisted of images from 1944 and students read out accounts from a book, Forgotten Voices of the Second World War, in which soldiers, sailors and air-men recalled their experiences.

Students from all year groups have seen the assemblies but NVA (Normandy Veteran Association) member Hector Duff was the special guest of honour at the Year 10 (aged 14/15) assembly last week.

Mr Duff also met the students who worked hard to produce the voices-overs and said he was ’delighted with the presentation’.

History teacher Andrew Wilkinson said: ’D Day was a significant turning point in the Second World War and it is important that students know about the contribution made by thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen, like Hector.’

Mr Duff invited all Ramsey Grammar School pupils and staff to the commemoration of D Day on June 6 at 10.15am in Ridgeway Street, Douglas.
