Applications are open for sixth-form students to win a scholarship to represent the Isle of Man at the 2022 United Space School in Houston, Texas.
The annual United Space School will take place from July 24 to August 8 with the ManSat Group awarding up to three scholarships to Year 12 and 13 students in the island.
It is usually only open to Year 12 students, but the offer has been extended to both year groups this time.
The successful scholars will travel to Houston and work alongside peers from around the world to plan a space mission, with support from NASA astronauts, engineers and scientists.
The Space School is run by the Foundation for International Space Education (FISE).
The scholarships are awarded in cooperation with the Department of Education, Sport and Culture, with the first recipient, in 2000, being Dr Jennifer Stone, who is now chief technical officer for ManSat.
Dr Stone said: ’ManSat has run this competition every year since 2000, with 44 Isle of Man students having attended Space School.
’Because of the pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 space schools were both held online. We hope the 2022 edition will be back in Houston, with a final decision on whether it will be held in-person or online to be made by the end of March.’
This year’s scholarships will be awarded to the students who provide the best answers to these three questions:
l Why are you interested in space?
l How do you think the Isle of Man can contribute to space exploration?
l Should humans return to the Moon before going to Mars? Please justify your answer.
All three questions must be answered, and each answer should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length.
The answers should be submitted in a single PDF file - firstname-secondname-school.pdf - and emailed to [email protected]
Entries will be anonymised before judging takes place.
The deadline for submissions is 11.59pm on Friday, January 14, and the winners will be announced by Thursday, January 20.
